The different styles of false eyelashes and how they compliment your makeup

A makeup without false eyelashes is like a cake without frosting; it’s just not finished. False eyelashes can transform your whole look, making your eyes stand out. With proper eyelashes you can correct one's eye shape, lift it, draw more attention to it and so on. There are a lot of types of eyelashes today on the market; from human hair, mink, synthetic, horse hair, etc. For this topic I will stick to human hair eyelashes because they look, feel and work the best on one’s eyes. It’s the same concept with hair extensions. If you compare synthetic hair and human hair, you will see how bad synthetic looks compared to real hair. Human hair lashes are noticeably lighter, they feel feathery and soft to the touch. The band is much more pliable (soft), and can easily bend to fit any eye shape.

Quality of eyelashes depends on hair type and the thickness of the band. Ardell, Amazing shine, Red Cherry, Eylure and Model rock are brands I love to work with. They are a little bit more expensive than the ones you see in trays on eBay (obviously), but they are totally worth the price, since you can use them more than once, if you take care of them properly. I will get to that on some other topic.

Fake eyelashes can come in different forms: Individuals, trio and strip eyelashes

Individual Flare Eyelashes

Individual Flare Eyelashes

Personally, I love individuals because they give that feathery, natural look and they blend so easily with your natural eyelashes. I love using them on my clients and myself, and hope these tips will inspire you to give them a go too. If you’re a bride or you are not used to heavier makeup, or maybe you don’t want anybody to notice you’re wearing eyelashes, then definitely go with couple of individuals between your natural eyelashes.

They come in different sizes, from extra small (XS) to large (L) which gives you the ability to create your own design, whatever compliments your eye shape or your current mood. The more individuals you apply, the more dramatic your eyes will appear, so, once again, you have the complete control and freedom to do your own style. The only con about individuals is that it takes time and patience if you do it yourself. Professional MUAs do it very fast and if you are a bride, I would suggest you ask for individuals. Bridal makeup is all about natural glow and soft looking eyelashes, so individuals are definitely the ones to go with.

Trio Flare Eyelashes

Trio false eyelashes have almost the same effect as the individuals and they are perfect if you are not skilled enough for applying individuals, or you simply don’t have time. As individuals, they also come in sizes. You can play with different styles, but in this case you have a little bit less freedom than when you use individual lashes. You can stack them for more dramatic look. My favourite are Amazing shine trio flares because their band is almost invisible and they blend so well.

TIP: If you don’t have patience or steady hand for applying individual eyelashes, start with Trio Flares first, then fill with individuals for more customised look.

Trio Pack

Some tips if you’re applying individual or trio false eyelashes yourself

  1. Curl your natural eyelashes if needed
False eyelashes are usually curled and this way you will blend yours with 'falsies'
  2. Apply a light coat of mascara on both sides of your eyelashes, up and down
This way you “paint” your naturals first in order to blend with false eyelashes, rather than risking getting mascara clumps on your 'falsies'
  3. Use waterproof black eye pencil on your upper waterline
In order to achieve more “expensive”, fuller look, gently apply waterproof eye pencil. Makeup Forever eye pencil is my favourite at the moment

Strip False Eyelashes

Strip false eyelashes are the most common people get in contact with. Most of professional makeup artists avoid strip lashes when doing bridal makeup for reasons mentioned above. They can be visible when the person looks down and for that, it is not the best option for a natural looking bride.

On the other hand, these eyelashes can be amazing, because they are so easy to apply. It takes only a couple of minutes; including cutting them, applying the glue and waiting for it to dry a bit. They come in various shapes and sizes, so you have plenty of options even if you’re not a pro. Some are natural, some are super dramatic. If you prefer a doll-like doe eye, go for lashes that are long in the center. If you like a sexy cat-eye, get lashes that become longer towards the ends. When choosing the right strip eyelashes, bear in mind your eye shape and eye length. They usually come pretty long which would fit a person with big almond eyes, but in most cases you have to trim them at the end to fit your lash line.

How to apply strip false eyelashes - step by step

  1. Measure them and trim at the end if needed
Gently remove them from their tray and measure them against your eye. Cut off any excess from the outer edge with nail scissors. Don’t throw away the bit you just cut - you can stack that bit on the end of your falsies for more dramatic cat eye.
  2. Apply the glue
Apply the light coat of glue on the band and wait 30 seconds or more for glue to dry a bit. My favourite brand is DUO. It comes in black and transparent versions. Depending on what look you’re going for, choose the right glue finish.

  3. Use a tweezer or your fingers for applying
  4. When dry, slightly push your natural eyelashes up to your 'falsies' to blend even better and make them feel lighter
